Take the Raices Trail to get to the hidden gem of the Marino Ballena National Park. It is a beautiful dark sand beach with a distinctive sea cave at the south. Best visited at low tide, this beach offers opportunities for wildlife viewing in the forest that begins at the high tide line and along the beach and tide pools. Surfing and swimming are also possible here. A short trail to Playa Ballena begins at the small beach behind the arch (southern most part of the beach) and goes up the hill and down again to Playa Ballena. Watch the tides to avoid having to wait for another low tide (about 6 hours) to return to Playa de Arco and the Lodge. A fee of $6 is seldom gathered by MINAE officials so be ready to pay them if they ask.
